Review Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley

Graffiti Moon is the typical book that can be put on a list like "Amazing books you probably will not read, although you’ll should!" or "Best unknown books should be known" or simply "The Best Books".

Graffiti Moon leaves the usual pattern of Young Adult books and the author was not afraid to highlight the "discordant" note that makes the difference between an artist and an ordinary man. Heroes of Graffiti Moon are all different, special and cannot be found everywhere, and this gives the book a touch of bohemian flavor that provides consistency to the characters. Their feelings and emotions, despite having already been put to the test, are still pure, still uncorrupted by society, by rules and by the choices between what to do and what you want and you know it that you could do.

The author inspiringly combines the struggle of the young to identify themself and socially assert through what they are and their "fight" in order to tidy up their feelings and to get the dearness desired. The entwining is so good and complex that the reader will not even notice how many lessons he received. That also because that embroidery is wrapped in a romance that hangs up by a hair till the end and its fulfillment seems unlikely.

I have apeciated the way in which, without shyness or fear, the author explains the meanings of the characters’ works of art, highlighting that their interpretation depends primarily on emotional and intellectual ability of the viewer. It's an assumed risk, not many readers, especially the youngest, have the patience to give due attention to such details. But the author makes them easy to assimilate by offering the "versions" of the... three main characters, and by the way she did those details necessary for the love story.

Admirable is also the fact that the entire action of the book, this "journey of self-discovery" of the characters takes place in one single night. But this night is the threshold of an age and everything earn much deeper shades. A night that can permanently change the future, a night that focuses everything: action and some suspense, feelings, despair and hope, rhythm and passion!

Graffiti Moon is one of those books for the mind and soul.

Graffiti Moon e cartea tipică de pus în listele de genul “Uimitoarele cărți pe care probabil nu le vei citi, DEŞI AR TREBUI!” sau “Cele mai bune cărți necunoscute care ar trebui cunoscute” sau pur şi simplu “Cele mai bune cărți”.

Graffiti Moon iese din tiparul obişnuit al cărților Young Adult prin faptul că autoarei nu i-a fost frică să pună în valoare acea notă “discordantă” care face deosebirea între un artist şi un om obişnuit. Eroii din Graffiti Moon sunt cu toții diferiți, speciali şi nu pot fi întâlniți la tot pasul, iar acest lucru dă cărții o savoare şi o notă boemă care oferă consistență personajelor. Sentimentele şi trăirile lor, în ciuda faptului că déjà au fost puse la încercare, sunt încă pure, încă neviciate de societate, de reguli şi de alegerile dintre ceea ce trebuie să faci şi ceea ce ți-ai dori şi ai şti că ai putea face.

Autoarea îmbină inspirat lupta tânărului de a se identifica şi afirma social prin ceea ce este şi “lupta” pentru a-şi pune în ordine viața, sentimentele şi a obține afecțiunea dorită. Împletitura e atât de bună şi complexă încât cititorul nici nu va observa cum a primit multe lecții. Asta şi pentru faptul că liantul acestei broderii este povestea de dragoste care va atârna până în final de un fir de păr şi împlinirii căreia se pare că se împotrivesc multe.

Am apeciat şi modul în care, fără sfială sau frică, autoarea explică, prezintă semnificațiile operelor de artă ale personajelor, scoțând în evidență faptul că interpretarea lor depinde în primul rând de capacitatea afectivă şi intelectuală a privitorului. E un risc asumat, nu mulți cititori, mai ales dintre cei tineri, au răbdarea să dea atenția cuvenită unor asemenea detalii, dar modul în care o face autoarea, inclusiv prin oferirea "versiunilor" celor... trei personaje principale, şi modul în care a făcut necesare aceste detalii pentru conturarea poveştii de dragoste, le face uşor de asimilat.

De admirat este şi faptul că întreaga acțiune a cărții, această “călătorie inițiatică”a personajelor are loc într-o singură noapte. Dar această noapte este pragul maturității şi totul capătă nuanțe mult mai profunde, o noapte care poate schimba definitiv viitorul, o noapte care concentrează totul: acțiune şi ceva suspans, sentimente, deznădejde şi speranță, ritm şi pasiune!

Graffiti Moon este una dintre acele cărți de suflet care nu doar se citeşte, ci se simte.
